The Adventurists
Indiana Jones and the Last Saker Falcon

Welcome to our site! Archaeologists and Amateur Birdwatchers Stu Eve and Anna Collar - AKA team Indiana Jones and the Last Saker Falcon are DRIVING a tiny Suzuki Swift (1 litre) FROM CAMBRIDGE TO ULAAN BAATAR FOR CHARITY AS PART OF THIS YEAR'S MONGOL RALLY!

You can keep up to date with what ridiculous things we're doing to raise money, and, after July 24th, where in the world we are by following the blog link on the left; you can sponsor us by clicking on our Christina Noble Children's Foundation JustGiving page or on BirdLife International's JustGiving page (below left) or by following the donate page; and you can see a map of our route - follow the route link. Feel free to explore the website, make comments and suggestions about things we can do to help raise more moolah, or places and people we should visit on the way!

You can even send us a message which we will receive on our Rally phone wherever we are. Please feel free to send us tips, suggestions, news, anything - just remember to tell us who you are!

This is the story:  On the 24th July 2010, we aim to misbehave. Well, actually, we'll aim to get the car started, and make it go from Cambridge to Ulaan Baatar. Hopefully we won't encounter too many obstacles, like crazed Nazi doctors with coat-hangers that look like nun-chucks, psychotic American philanthropists with a desperate, murderous hunger for eternal youth, or machine-gun armed Messerschmidts. Or snakes. I hate snakes.

If we do, let's hope that our combination of a wry smile, a bullwhip and an over-full notebook full of mad sketches and directions to places where one could have one's face melted off by malevolent Ark of the Covenant spirits will get us out of it.

Why are we called Indiana Jones and the Last Saker Falcon? Well, Stu and I are archaeologists, and we're pretty keen on bird conservation. The Saker Falcon is a beautiful bird of prey, endemic to the steppe, with a range from the Balkans (it's the national bird of Hungary) to Mongolia, and it's on the endangered list. We want to contribute to saving it.

This is the Mongol Rally. This is the deal. We drive a small, terrible car (1.2cc, no more, and under 10 years old, as the rules stipulate) from Cambridge to Mongolia, with no route, no back up, no GPS, i.e., just like the good old days. This is A PROPER ADVENTURE. Honestly there won't even be cameramen (apart from Stu).

We need sponsorship: corporate, personal, impersonal, or in kind, whatever. If you're Harrison Ford, that's brilliant - if you just want us out of your hair, that's also fair enough. Donations of vehicles, Mongolian dictionaries, jerry cans or umbrellas most welcome!

But the main aim is to raise money for charity. We've gone much further than the Adventurists require and are aiming to raise a massive £10,000 for two extremely worthy charities.

Our first is the Christina Noble Children's Foundation, which in Mongolia funds the Blue Skies Ger Village - housing homeless or abandoned kids and giving them a proper start at life.

Our second charity is close to both our hearts - my dad's an ornithologist and Stu's great friend Jez was at one time Young Ornithologist of the Year. So we've chosen BirdLife International - striving to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, by working with people towards sustainability.

We want to help sustain the future of the planet - by supporting both people and nature. Have a look through our website, find out more about our charities and the bizarre ways we are trying to raise money for them, and generally see where we're at. But please, dig deep and give all you can!

Well, and wish us luck!
